In the last couple days Ombudsman Services of San Mateo County received two complaints regarding verbal and also a physical abuse by a relative to their mother. A physical therapist who happened to visit a facility witnessed the resident’s daughter slap her mother’s arm. The daughter was also verbally abusive to her. The resident, who has dementia had just arrived that day. He called our office and filed a report. We recognized her name and realized the resident had been at another facility about a year ago and her daughter was verbally aggressive there. When the administrator reprimanded her, she moved her mother out and brought her home.
In our other complaint, fortunately staff recognized daughter’s verbal demeanor was abusive and also observed daughter placing her hand over the resident’s mouth when she visited. Staff are monitoring her visits. This resident also had been at living at home with her daughter prior to her admission.
These are probably not isolated incidents and for whatever reason, any form of abuse is not acceptable. Perhaps as a neighbor or relative you may see something – say something. You may make a real difference in someone’s life – perhaps even life and death.
